The goal of the 'National Land Cover Characterization (NLCC)' project in ESS's Program 'Understanding Canada from Space (UCS)', is to improve existing and develop new algorithms to provide earth science information from earth observation (EO) data that is relevant for assessing Canadian land cover and land use change. The NLCC project outputs strive to meet government, public, private, and educational needs for environmental information as well as to address international commitments. The NLCC includes development of a comprehensive versatile multi-scale national land cover / land use and change detection datasets. This dataset was generated to provide spatially and thematically consistent land and vegetation cover of Northern Canada above the treeline at medium (30 m) Landsat resolution. These data are made publicly available so that scientist and policy makers working on northern related issues have access to detailed geospatial data to inform their efforts. In addition, the dataset is intended to provide an unprecedented snapshot of Northern Canada for educational purposes. The data collection includes a 15 land cover class product as well as a 200 spectral cluster product intended to allow the user to generate a more detailed land cover product over smaller regions where the 15 class product may be too generalized for the intended purpose. Both products are available at 30 m spatial resolution as 1:250k National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) tiles in GeoTIFF format. The 15 class legend was developed by consulting several existing land cover and vegetation cover products in the north, and extracting common classes from their legends while considering classes that are spectrally separable based on fieldwork and experience interpreting northern land cover.
